Research lessons starting for grades 3-5! |
Thank you all so much for the incredibly warm welcome you've given me to Davis Drive! I'm so looking forward to a great year with everyone. I was able to meet with all K-5 teachers to provide updates about changes in the library. I also met with a few TA's. If there are other staff who I missed who would like a little tour of the space now that I've moved things around, please don't hesitate to ask. I want all of the adults in the building to feel as comfortable in the library as the students do. A quick review of the most major change that will impact everyone:

As students in grades 3-5 come for their 2nd special in the library, we will be diving right in to research. Students will be introduced to the eWISE research process, and will work through the steps to learn more about Katherine Applegate, Newbery Award-winning author who will be visiting our school on Friday, October 2nd! You can see the lesson they will be working through on the "Student Work" tab of this website. Please feel free to incorporate the eWISE model into your own lessons, and use any of the resources on this website to help promote this author visit in your classroom.
Research in K-2!Younger students will spend another week learning their way around the library and interacting with the library space in fun ways. Then, I will introduce the same eWISE research process to them. We will read the nonfiction picture book: IVAN: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla by Katherine Applegate. We will then use the research process to learn more about gorillas. I'm hoping our PebbleGo subscription will be completely active by then so that I can introduce that resource to students as well.

Wait...did you say, "author visit?"
YES!!!! I'm so excited to share with everyone that we have the honor of hosting a visit with Katherine Applegate (the 2013 Newbery Award winner for her book The One and Only Ivan--one of my favorite kid books EVER!) on Friday, October 2nd to promote her new book, Crenshaw, which comes out at the end of September. I know I've told some of you, but hadn't spread the word to everyone. I'm going to begin announcing it to students as they come through the library this week and next. YAY!!!!
What does this mean?
What does this mean?
- On Friday, October 2nd, grades 3-5 will attend an assembly at 9am to hear Katherine Applegate speak for approximately 1 hour. Though Crenshaw's target audience (and Ms. Applegate's presentation) are targeted to the 3-5 age, her other books are suitable for younger children. Our entire school will have the opportunity to preorder a number of Katherine Applegate's books from Quail Ridge Books, which will be signed and personalized by the author. If you are a K-2 teacher who choses to promote this within your classroom and thinks your students would enjoy hearing her presentation, her publicist has given me permission to stream the event so that you can watch it in your classrooms if you'd like. Please let me know if this is something you are interested in (so that I can figure out how to do it!).
- There is an Advanced Reader Copy of Crenshaw that the publisher sent us. If you are interested in reading it before it is released, let me know. It's a very quick read.
- I will be tailoring my lessons at all grade levels to promote this author visit. However, I would LOVE your help! Anything you can do to promote this author visit in your classroom would be much appreciated. The One and Only Ivan would be an excellent read aloud in 3-5 (and even younger grades in my opinion). K-2 kids I've taught in the past have LOVED her Roscoe Riley Rules series. If you would like one of these books for your classroom, please complete the form below and I'll make sure I get enough copies for everyone (or at least enough to share) ASAP.
